Sick Baby Dies After Red Light Crash: NYPD

A family that was rushing a 6-month-old baby to the hospital plowed through a red light at a Staten Island intersection and was struck by another vehicle, police said. The baby didn't survive.

The baby boy had been experiencing flu-like symptoms and was unresponsive, so the mother and her cousin were driving him to the hospital at about 3 a.m. Saturday, the NYPD said.

The cousin drove through a red light at Forest Avenue and Broadway in the West Brighton neighborhood, the NYPD said. Their van was struck by a Jeep in the intersection.

The child, Damaris Earps, was pronounced dead at Richmond University Medical Center. It's not clear what caused his death.

Both vehicles remained at the scene and neither driver was hurt.

The investigation is ongoing.
