A grandmother and her two grandchildren were hospitalized after a fire broke out at a home on Long Island, officials and neighbors said.
The fire tore through the first and second floors of a home on N. 12th Street in New Hyde Park around 3 a.m. on Sunday, a fire chief at the scene said.
Two grandparents, their grandson and granddaughter and a fifth person were inside the house when the fire broke out, police and neighbors said.
The grandmother, 68, her 4-year-old granddaughter and her 10-year-old grandson were taken to the hospital to receive treatment for smoke inhalation and burns, police and firefighters said.
The grandson was listed in stable condition, but the grandmother and her granddaughter were both in serious condition, according to police.
The grandfather and the other person inside the home weren't injured, police said.
The grandson escaped from the home by climbing through a window on the second floor and jumping onto a parked vehicle, witnesses said.
The fire melted the siding off the home next door.
An investigation is ongoing.
