Two men with guns tied up a young boy and his caretaker in a violent home invasion in the Bronx, police said.
The 7-year-old boy and 66-year-old man were returning home from a school bus stop in the Belmont neighborhood on Thursday afternoon when the thieves attacked.
As the two returned to an apartment, the suspects pushed their way in behind them, forced them to the floor and tied them up, police said.
The thieves pistol-whipped the man and ransacked the apartment, stealing $6,000 in cash.
Police say the child’s mother owns a cell phone business and the two suspects knew she had money. She was away during the robbery. It’s unclear if the man who takes care of the boy is a family member or hired to help.
After the suspects took off, the man was able to untie himself and call 911. He and the boy were taken to Barnabas Hospital as a precaution. The boy was picked up by his mother at the hospital, and the man refused medical attention.
When the mom and son returned home they discovered a cell phone and a hat in the apartment. Police are examining the items as evidence.
