A four-year-old girl is dead and a 39-year-old mother was injured after they were struck by a car in Brooklyn while walking on the sidewalk, police say.
A driver backing up a black SUV near the intersection of Wyckoff Avenue and Hart Street in Bushwick hit the two around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, authorities said. The girl died and the mother was taken to an area hospital, where she is in stable condition.
The driver fled the scene, but police said they took her into custody a few blocks away. Police questioned her, trying to figure out if she knew what had happened.
Surveillance video from the scene shows the child and her mother walking on the sidewalk. The girl is seen stopping to pick something up before the car suddenly slams into the duo.
Witnesses blame the set up of the parking lot, which runs parallel with the sidewalk the mother and child were on when they were hit.
The names of the two victims and the woman driver have not been released.
