American Airlines Expands Travel Alerts, Adds Waivers

American Airlines said Friday they're expanding travel alerts and allowing passengers traveling to change flights for no additional fees due to winter storms in the northeast and Midwest.

While there are no travel alerts for Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, there are more than three dozen destinations that are now impacted by severe weather.

The airline said travelers headed to nearly three dozen destinations in the northeast can change their flights for free provided they meet certain criteria, including that their travel is currently scheduled for Dec. 1-2.

Another dozen or so destinations in the Midwest may be impacted by Winter Storm Ezekiel -- travelers flying on Nov. 29 and 30 may be able to reschedule their trips for no charge.

9 Dead, Including 2 Children, in South Dakota Plane Crash

Nine people, including two children, were killed Saturday when a plane crashed in rough weather near Chamberlain, South Dakota, authorities said.

A Pilatus PC-12, a single-engine turboprop passenger plane, had as many as 12 people on board when it crashed shortly after takeoff about a mile from Chamberlain Municipal Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

Brule County state's attorney Theresa Maule Rossow said survivors were hospitalized in Sioux Falls, NBC News reports. Among the dead was the plane's pilot, she said.

First responders at the scene "should be commended in their heroic actions to rescue the victims in extreme weather conditions," Rossow said in a statement.

Possible Illegal Gambling Game in Chinatown Robbed: NYPD

Three armed men stormed into a Chinatown basement on Thanksgiving and stole cash and jewelry at a possible illegal gambling game, police said.

The NYPD says its investigation of Thursday's crime, caught on video, is still ongoing. Police are looking for three men that entered the basement room as a large group of people watched a card game.

News 4 obtained video of the scary scene as the men pulled out a gun and a large knife used to intimidate the victims. Then the video shows the men go one-by-one, forcing people to empty their pockets.

According to police, the suspects stole cash and jewelry from 11 people in the basement of the bodega.

The NYPD released images of the thieves on Saturday asking for anyone who recognizes them to call police.

Police say most of the 11 victims were in their 60s. An estimated $5,000 was stolen from the robbery, the NYPD said.

The NYPD says none of the victims were injured.

'Major Sewage Backup' Strikes 300 Homes in Queens: Officials

Hundreds of people living in southeast Queens suffered a "major sewage backup" Saturday evening, city officials said.

Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted around 3 p.m. that city crews were responding to a sewage backup impacting roughly 300 homes.

The homes are located along Inwood Street, the FDNY said. The fire department, NYC Water, Emergency Management and the Red Cross were all dispatched to the area.

The Department of Environmental Protection has asked neighbors in the 11436 zipcode to reduce water use to help the repair process, de Blasio said.

The mayor also said that drinking water is safe and unaffected by the backup.

It was not immediately known how long it would take for crews to complete all repairs to the blockage.

MTA Driver Gets Glass in Eye After Bottle Smashed on Window

A bus driver was left with in glass in his eye after a bottle was thrown at him, and a subway conductor was punched in the face in separate incidents against MTA workers in Harlem, the transit agency said.

Surveillance video, obtained exclusively by NBC New York, shows a car pull up to the intersection of West 136th Street and Broadway on the west side around 2:30 p.m. Friday. The driver of the vehicle is seen parking the car along the island separating the roadway, then waiting for the bus to approach.

That’s when the suspect, who police believe to be a 30-year-old man, throws a glass bottle at the moving M5 bus as it passes in front of him, according to the NYPD. The driver’s side window of the bus shattered, leaving the driver blinded with glass exploding in his face. Broken glass was left scattered all around the driver’s seat after the incident.

There were multiple passengers on board the bus at the time of the attack, including another off-duty bus operator who was also injured. The driver was being treated at the hospital for his injuries, with bits of glass stuck in his eye.

The suspect who threw the bottle took off driving north on Broadway. Police believe the car carrying the suspect to be a black Ford with New Jersey license plates.

The other incident occurred about two hours earlier at the 125th Street stop on the A line. As the northbound train was pulling out of the station, a male punched the conductor in the face. The victim was taken from inside the cab to a hospital for treatment, and the suspect ran from the station.

The MTA issued a statement regarding both of the attacks on their employees, calling them “reprehensible.” The Transit Workers Union said the violent incidents were “disgusting and those responsible need to be caught and prosecuted. We want to see them in handcuffs.”

Police are searching for suspects in both attacks, motives for which were not immediately clear.

Anyone with information regarding either incident is asked to contact police.

Lucky NJ Store Sold Two Powerball Tickets Worth $100K Each

It may not be Atlantic City, but two people won big in New Jersey after buying Powerball tickets worth $100,000 each — from the same store.

In the small Monmouth County town of Little Silver, which sits just below Red Bank and has a population of under 6,000, sits the Little Silver Family Pharmacy. That’s where two NJ Lottery tickets were sold which each were big winners worth $50,000 apiece, according to lottery officials.

But both tickets that matched four of the five white balls were bought with the Powerplay, multiplying the winnings to $100,000.

It is not known if either of the tickets have been claimed yet. There were no winners for the Powerball jackpot, which increased to $110 million before the next drawing Saturday night.

Street Shutdowns Around Rockefeller Center Take Effect

One of New York City’s biggest tourist destinations this time of year had a major change take effect on Friday which should delight pedestrians — but could irritate drivers.

It’s estimated that more than 125 million people visit Rockefeller Center during the holiday season, and anyone who has gone (or works in the area) knows, it makes for some crowded conditions on the sidewalks, especially closer to the iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.

But the NYPD is hoping to alleviate some of that congestion by closing off streets around the area, putting the brakes on automobile traffic and yielding to foot traffic. Starting on Friday and lasting throughout the holiday season, West 49th and 50th Streets between Fifth and Sixth Avenues will be for pedestrians only during the most highly congested times — around 1 p.m. until midnight during the week, and from 10 a.m. to midnight on weekends.

Two lanes of traffic will also be eliminated on Fifth Avenue, and one lane taken out on Sixth Avenue, between West 48th Street and West 52nd Street.

This will allow for the big crowds to spread out a bit onto those streets without having to worry about passing vehicles, even if these moves come at the expense of some of the street traffic.

For that, the NYPD says that alterations can be made depending on a variety of factors, including crowd size, weather or an emergency. The barricades, concrete blocks, blocker cars and officers diverting traffic can be moved and adjusted depending on what the circumstances call for.

As for how people are reacting to the changes, most who came on the Thanksgiving holiday weekend seemed very happy with the decision.

“It really does get crowded on the sidewalks and it does help as far as having another place to walk,” said New Jersey resident Margie LaGratta, who visits every year with her husband Al. “I think it makes a big difference.”

“It’s so special and I think that the safety component is so great,” said Andrea Tan, who was visiting with her family. “With New York City and just having the police presence, you feel good coming as a family. We’re really grateful.”

New York City's firefighters union previously cautioned against Mayor de Blasio's plan to expand the pedestrian space around Rockefeller Center, calling the plan "misguided and makes this city less safe — plain and simple."

The FDNY-Uniformed Firefighters Association said the street closures over the holiday season could actually become a safety concern.

"As it is, traffic is interfering with our firefighters abilities to reach the scene of a fire, but this new plan will have wide-felt repercussions in the form of traffic from river-to-river," said President of the Uniformed Firefitghters Association Gerard Fitzgerald.

"We all want pedestrian safety, but a key component of safety for all is the ability for New York’s first responders to reach the scene of an emergency, and this is not the best way to ensure the safety of New York’s over 8-million residents and millions of holiday visitors,” Fitzgerald added.

A spokesperson for the FDNY said the department will work closely with the city and "that our members can quickly respond to emergencies in and around Rockefeller Center."

Crowds are expected to flood the Plaza for the annual holiday tree lighting on Wednesday, Dec. 4 -- and every day thereafter to witness the 72-ton, 77-foot-tall Norway spruce in all its glory until it comes down on Jan. 14, 2020. See full details on the tree selected for this year's honor -- and how it grew from a plant on a coffee table in a New York village to taking the prime spot in Manhattan.

Woman, 77, Killed in Yonkers Thanksgiving Hit-and-Run

A driver in Yonkers was seen on video going to check on a woman he allegedly stuck with his vehicle as she tried crossing the street, then taking off after being confronted by a witness.

The man pulled his pickup truck to the side of Yonkers Avenue just moments after police say he hit the 77-year-old woman around 5:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving. When someone comes up to talk to the driver, he can be seen on video exclusively obtained by NBC New York going back to his truck and speeding away.

The woman, identified later as Po Yol Han, died Thursday night after she was brought to the hospital. Han lived in an apartment building just a few blocks from where she was struck, and neighbors described her as a friendly woman who kept to herself.

Following the incident, police tracked down a “vehicle of interest” about a mile away from the scene, but no one was inside.

Anyone with information regarding the crash, or the truck and driver involved, is asked to contact Yonkers police.

Erratic Driver Arrested in LI Road Rage Stabbing Attack

A man believed to be responsible for a violent Thanksgiving road rage attack on Long Island that left a victim stabbed has been arrested, according to police.

Gregory Spina was arrested Friday afternoon for allegedly attacking and stabbing another driver after erratically navigating along Wading River Road in Manorville just a day prior, Suffolk County police said.

Witnesses said they saw Spina's grey Volvo weaving in and out of traffic for two miles around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, while tailgating closely behind other cars.

A couple on their way to Thanksgiving dinner thought Spina, 43, had struck their Hyundai SUV and pulled over to inspect the car. When they got out to take a look, Spina and the male driver got into an argument. Shortly after, Spina is accused of taking out a knife and plunging it into the victim's stomach, police said, before fleeing the scene.

Spina was charged with second degree assault, and is expected to be arraigned on Saturday. Attorney information for the Glen Cove resident was not immediately available.

The victim, whose car police said was not struck by the wild driver, was brought to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries, but is expected to survive, according to police. His wife, who was in the car with him, was not injured.

15-Ounce "Micro-Preemie" Raises Need for Blood Donations

A tiny baby born four months early and weighing just 15-ounces has already made a name for herself at the San Diego Blood Bank.

"Micro-Preemie" Giselle Flores was born on Nov. 17 after her mother was diagnosed with Hemolysis, Elevated Liver Enzymes, Low Platelet Count (HELLP) syndrome, a life-threatening pregnancy complication and severe form of preeclampsia.

Courtney Almazan, Giselle's mother, had complained of severe headaches, swelling, and nausea before her emergency room visit, all of which turned out to be signs of liver and kidney failure.

Doctors rushed Courtney Almazan into surgery for an emergency C-section saving her life, while at the same time giving another life one of the most fragile beginnings ever seen.

"It's crazy, she seems bigger in pictures or on your phone, but in real life, she's tiny," Courtney Almazan said.

Baby Giselle has no fat, can't breathe on her own, and has already had three blood transfusions in her first two weeks in the Sharp Mary Birch Hospital NICU.

"They're doing a lot of blood work on her and she can't produce enough blood to keep up with the tests," Courtney Almazan said.

Her family, wanting to do something to help in this helpless time, put out a call to friends about donating blood.

The message spread quickly on social media, so much the San Diego Blood Bank even created a special code for people donating in honor of baby Giselle.

"The timing couldn't be better," said David Wellis, the blood bank's CEO. "Blood donations go down during the holidays when families are traveling, and college students are on break."

Giselle's story had already triggered 79 donations as of Friday morning according to San Diego Blood Bank numbers, but those are just people who used her code. It's likely her story triggered even more donations leading to a bump in donations during this time of year compared to the same time last year.

Giselle's future remains unclear, and the family said every day is filled with ups and downs as their tiny miracle baby fights for survival.

"She's just a little fighter, they refer to her as feisty in the NICU," said Angela Shirley, Giselle's grandma.

Courtney Almazan has yet to hold her daughter and spends a lot of time by her side, soothing her with a light, gentle touch.

"Her head is just perfectly formed. Her little tiny fingers and her toes, she grabs on to things already, she holds on to her breathing tube, she's amazing," Shirley said.

Giselle will remain at the hospital until March at the earliest.

But, despite all of the challenges, doctors recently gave the family some good news, saying they believe Giselle's chances of survival are "very high."

Giselle's family set up a GoFundMe account to help during this time. For those that would like to donate blood in Giselle's honor can say the code word GF19 at the San Diego Blood Bank.

Thor the Bulldog Wins National Dog Show, Drops Hammer on 2,000 Other Good Boys and Girls

It's Thanksgiving Day. Of course the National Dog Show was won by a short round dog that looks like it just swallowed a full turkey — the bulldog.

Diamond Gold Majesu Pisko Bulls (but you can call him Thor) beat out more than 2,000 other dogs for Best in Show at the Kennel Club of Philadelphia's National Dog Show. The competition took place on Nov. 16 in Oaks, Pennsylvania, but the results were kept in strictest secrecy until the show aired Thursday on NBC.

"I love this dog," trainer Eduardo Paris of Houston said of Thor, a 2-year-old, 60-pound boulder of tan and white who was born in Lima, Peru, and is owned by Kara Gordon of Midland, Pennsylvania.

"He's a dog that always gives everything for me," said Paris, who described Thor as "a very complete dog."

Rival NJ Schools Play Their Last Thanksgiving Football Game

What has become an annual Thanksgiving tradition for generations in New Jersey has come to an end for two rival high schools.

The Clifton Mustangs and Passaic Indians played their final “Turkey Bowl” on Thursday, marking the end of a game that has brought alumni for both schools together for more than two decades.

The two schools have been playing on the fourth Thursday of every November since 1992, joining the tradition of New Jersey high school football that has been played on Thanksgiving for over 100 years.

“I graduated in 1993. So 1992 was the football season, and that's the first year that we started playing this game on Thanksgiving,” said Clifton Head Coach Ralph Cinque. “I played in the first one and coached in the last one. Pretty special.”

School officials say longer high school sports seasons forced the change.

“They have been out here since July. And to go all the way through November, and then it overlaps with the winter season — it takes a lot out of the kids academically, and also physically,” said Passaic High Schools’ Athletic Director Kimberly Kenny, who recognized that the decision to end the tradition may upset some people.

During this year’s game, many former players for both sides came back for one last hurrah and to re-live some memories — while the current generation forms some of their own.

“Former students, former players, their children are playing right now. So what we get is the true form of a community at its purest form,” said Ahmad Field. The Passaic alumnus was upset to see the annual event come to an end.

“The people making decisions may not understand what this means. It’s Thanksgiving, the people from the community want to be here,” he said.

Although this year will be the final time the two school meet on the gridiron on Thanksgiving, the rival teams will still play one another at another time during future regular seasons.

Erratic Driver Stabs Man on LI in Road Rage Attack: Police

A driver wildly going along Long Island streets stabbed a man in a fit of road rage after the victim suspected his car had been struck, police said.

Suffolk County officers were called to the scene in Manorville just after 2:30 p.m. Thursday after reports of a man driving erratically on Wading River Road, according to officials, as it was driving fast and attempting to pass other vehicles.

A driver of one of the cars the man tried to pass believed his car had been struck at the intersection of South Street, and pulled into a nearby parking lot to check on any damages, police said.

The erratic driver also stopped and — after a verbal altercation with the man and woman in the SUV — stabbed the driver in the stomach, according to Suffolk County police.

The victim, whose car police said was not struck by the wild driver, was brought to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries. His wife, who was in the car with him, was not injured.

Shortly after, the suspect fled the scene and is sought by police. An investigation is ongoing, anyone with information is asked to contact the Suffolk County police.

Hold Your Horses: Wandering Equine Rescued From Pool

A horse in Bucks County had to be rescued after falling into a swimming pool and getting stuck in the cold water Thursday.

The wandering equine became enmeshed after stepping onto a pool covering that gave way under its weight around 8:10 a.m. at a property on Ashton Road in Bensalem Township, the Bensalem Fire Recue said on Twitter.

Firefighters, Bensalem Police officers and nearby residents quickly got to work, pulling the horse, which belonged to a neighbor, out of the pool after about 20 minutes and covering the wet equine with large blankets to warm it back up.

Accused Shooter in NJ HS Football Game Killing Stays Jailed

A man accused of firing a gun into the crowded bleachers of a New Jersey high school football game, killing a 10-year-old boy, will be held in jail until his trial.

Alvin Wyatt, of Atlantic City, is charged with murder and other offenses stemming from the Nov. 15 shooting at a playoff game in South Jersey.

Superior Court Judge Bernard DeLury noted that Wyatt faces life behind bars if convicted.

Micah Tennant, the 10-year-old from Atlantic City died a few days after the shooting.

Tennant was struck in the neck by a bullet on Friday as he sat on bleachers watching a football game between Pleasantville and Camden high schools. He fell into a coma from his injuries while being treated at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

One of two other people struck by bullets, 27-year-old Ibn Abdullah, allegedly was the intended target, police have said. Abdullah, who allegedly brought a gun to the game, has also been charged in the shooting. A 15-year-old was grazed by a bullet, but has been released from the hospital.

Wyatt was captured in the end zone moments after the shooting by a Pleasantville officer assigned to the game.

Wyatt's attorney did not address his client's guilt or innocence during Wednesday's court hearing in Mays Landing.

The attorney left the courtroom without speaking to reporters. A message seeking comment was left with his office afterward.

The Philadelphia Eagles offered up their stadium to play out the remainder of the game days later.

Some NYCHA Residents Have No Gas to Cook Thanksgiving Dinner

As millions of Americans are in the midst of preparing all the foods they’ll need for their Thanksgiving feasts, some families in Brooklyn won’t even be able to cook a turkey in their kitchens thanks to a gas outage.

Ovens in the New York City Housing Authority’s Marlboro Houses will be cold this holiday — and have been for weeks after residents called in a leak last month.

The housing authority told NBC New York that National Grid had to shut off the entire gas line due to massive infrastructure problems, with the leak coming from the main gas line into the building.

Many residents of the Gravesend housing complex are at their wits end with the agency, which has given each unit just a hotplate to cook their food.

“What am I supposed to do? Go get a pound of Boar’s Head honey roasted turkey, a can of gravy, pour it over, put it in the microwave and say here? What thanksgiving?” said Margie Simmons, who showed NBC New York the electric fryer she will be using to fry chicken instead. Another resident said she will taking her son to a church on Thursday for their Thanksgiving meal.

NYCHA released a statement saying that “while we understand the urgency and inconvenience to residents, we can only restore gas when the root cause of the outage is fully addressed, testing is complete, safety is ensured and we have sign off by the provider.”

Officials are not sure yet if there will even be gas in time for the December holidays either, as there is no estimated date when the issues can be fully fixed.

Brooklyn Councilman Mark Treyger said NYCHA hasn’t answered any of his questions regarding the gas shutoff, including if staff had flagged this concern prior to the gas leak.

“This is ridiculous. It’s shameful. NYCHA residents should not be going through this. We pay our rent just like anybody else,” said Simmons. “We should not live like this. Stop it NYCHA. Stop it. And do the right thing. Enough is enough.”

Where Do NYC's Food Carts Go — And How Clean Are They Kept?

While the New York City Department of Health has been issuing food carts grades for nearly a year, the garages where the carts are cleaned, stored and often stocked with food continue to be a mystery to hungry New Yorkers.

An investigation by the I-Team found that some of these commissaries have received dozens of violations — like food stored at improper temperatures, contamination and evidence of rats and mice.

Cart operator Jalal Hasanpoor has witnessed food carts parked next to dumpsters and carts swarmed with flies and mosquitoes, as well as encounters with owners who refuse to wash their carts at all.

“At other commissaries, the ground is pretty bad. When you enter in the garage, you see a lot of garbage,” said Hasanpoor. “They don’t wash their carts. There’s a lot of flies coming around those foods, it makes a lot of disease.”

NBC New York obtained thousands of commissary inspection records from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The data reflects three years from January 2016 through January 2019. There are roughly 130 mobile food vending commissaries and more than 5,000 food carts listed in NYC.

The commissary with the most violations is Golden Wholesale, LLC. on 39th St. in Manhattan, which amassed 85 violations in that three-year period.

The owner of Golden Wholesale, who asked not to be named, told NBC New York he tries to keep his commissary clean and always corrects violations promptly. He said cart owners often create the violations and Golden Wholesale gets unfairly blamed.

“You’re only as good as where you get the product from,” said John Murn, co-owner of M & J Commissary in Long Island City.

M&J Commissary had among the best ratings, with the I-Team finding just 6 violations unrelated to food storage over three years.

Murn believes food carts should also have to post the commissaries they use, right next to the cart’s grade or permit.

“If the cart has an A-rating and a commissary has an A-rating, me as a consumer, I feel great about it,” said Murn.

The city does require food carts have the name of their commissary with them at all times. But NBC New York discovered that few food carts could actually name which commissary they store their cart at or where the food might come from.

Out of the seven vendors that spoke with NBC New York, only two had documents with their commissary’s name.

According to the inspection records obtained by NBC, those two commissaries had 28 violations each, including evidence of mice and roaches during that same three-year period. Both were among the 25 commissaries with the most violations.

The only other way to find out what commissary a cart uses is to follow them. NBC New York followed one cart from Manhattan Commissary Inc., to the corner of West 39th Street and Broadway. The cart had a gas tank and an unsecured sack of onions on its roof.

According to inspection records, Manhattan Commissary had 48 violations including not providing proper sanitization for washing utensil ware, as well as evidence of mice, roaches and flying insects present in facility.

Manhattan Commissary, Inc. did not respond to multiple requests for comment from NBC New York.

“As a native New Yorker who occasionally enjoys a quick bite from a food cart, I think that’s pretty disgusting,” said Queens resident Keisha Coursey.

City officials tell NBC New York that a searchable website is currently underway, which will “include information about the commissary for that cart or truck and provide results for the most recent commissary inspection.”

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene declined interview requests.

But in an official statement, the department’s spokesperson says, “The NYC Health Department promotes the health and safety of all New Yorkers, in part, by monitoring the food safety practices of food carts and trucks – and the commissaries where they are serviced daily. We are committed to helping all food carts and trucks achieve an “A” and assisting commissaries in maintaining safe and clean environments.”

According to Murn, the most efficient solution will stem from honesty between all parties involved.

“It’s got to be total transparency. Without total transparency in food, you don’t know exactly what you’re getting.”
