Multiple manhole fires disturbed some New York City residents as they trudged to work on a damp Friday, causing a loud bang at one point that at least one Twitter user described as sounding like a "huge explosion."
Fire trucks were present at the scene near Broadway and 12th Street just before 8 a.m. and the city warned to expect extensive traffic delays in the area.
One person on Twitter described hearing two loud bangs and said the second shook her building.
Initial reports indicated up to three manholes may have blown. The cause is under investigation.
