A storeowner in Brooklyn alerted police to a suspicious job applicant who ended up being a fugitive who had escaped from a jail in the Midwest months ago.
The East New York storeowner was the break police needed to capture Staling Santos-Reyes, who escaped from a jail in central Ohio in April.
“I can’t express how amazing this community member is,” NYPD Sgt. Tim Cecchini said. “He’s aces, he’s the guy.”
Santos-Reyes was serving time for drug possession charges at the Tri-County Jail west of Columbus, Ohio, when he escaped.
Police said Santos-Reyes was working kitchen duty and taking out the trash when he made a run for it. Somehow he ended up in East New York, where he was caught Thursday.
